What I’ve Learnt About Writing (After Writing 4 Short Stories and Starting 3 Books)

Sometimes I’m just struck with the urge to write. I don’t know what to write, I just have a set genre and I sit down and write the first thing that pops into my head.

That’s how half of my short stories came around. For the books I did do some plotting before I started them.

But this what I have learned:

Writing is not romantic. Writing takes effort. Writing takes discipline. It is not for the faint of heart or those who are not perseverant. It also takes time. Jerry Jenkins wrote 75 books before one of them became a New York Times best-seller.

Did you know that there are colleges that have people that are hired to de-romanticize the careers people choose? People who wanted to be a lawyer chose a different career because the de-romanticizer told them every aspect of the job and the student decided it wasn’t for them. Well, that’s what I just did to writing. I de-romanticized it. But I’m trying! I believe I can push through the hardness of writing and become successful. Just watch, 75 books in the future, and I’ll be a best seller.

But don’t take my word for it. I reach for the stars. I may never become well-known.

But on another note, I’ve found the easiest part of writing for me is having the characters work together in harmony. Even when Erin is punching Jackson in the face 😉, I can make it work. But I find the hardest part is tying the story together and having it all flow. I try and map out how everything should progress and it frustrates me! But practice makes perfect, so I’m trying. And now I’m done ranting.
